Funded through the Federal and Provincial Government employment programs, Lower Trent Conservation has hired 7 post-secondary students for the summer. These opportunities give students on-the-job experience related to their field of study.
Name: Samantha Nurse
Area of Study: Environmental Studies
Current School: Carleton University
Job Title: Conservation Area Events and Marketing Assistant
Samantha, or Sam, joined the Lower Trent Conservation staff team as a summer student this year. As Events and Marketing Assistant, she is involved in preparing new social media plans and brochures, designing graphics, writing the summer student series blogs, and assisting with special events.
Sam’s first impression of the job was being excited but also a little overwhelmed.
“My first official day was helping with the set up for the Quinte Children’s Water Festival followed by two days of interacting with 850 students at various water-related activities. However, I soon realized that there was a lot to do which made it more interesting knowing there will be many different components to the job.”
With assisting in all aspects of the events, it’s no wonder one of Sam’s favourite moments of the summer was working at a popular annual event, Seymour Family Fishing Day.
Aside from working at Lower Trent Conservation, Sam enjoys to play sports like volleyball, hockey, and soccer, as well as traveling with friends and family.
When asked about why she wanted to work at Lower Trent Conservation, Sam says,
“I have wanted to work for a conservation authority since I was in Grade 11. I specifically wanted to work with Lower Trent Conservation because it is a great environmental organization that has a positive outlook on how we can help our waterways.”
